The Grocery Store Connection

Step into my worn-out shoes, where the doldrums of everyday life converge with the subtle hum of the spirit world. —a regular, hardworking individual—on a journey to—yup—the grocery store!

As I pushed my shopping cart – you know the one that has the wheel that kind of gets stuck– through the fluorescent-lit aisles of the local grocery store, my mind was focused on the mundane task of picking up essentials. In the middle of the produce section, surrounded by the vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables, a sudden chill caught me by surprise. It wasn’t the chill of a malfunctioning freezer; it was an otherworldly shiver, you know it, it’s when you get chicken skin, and every hair on your arm stands to attention–a signal that the ethereal was about to break through the surface of the everyday.

Please note: I will not, and do not ever read anyone in public unless it is a public demonstration I have been hired to do. Ethical considerations form the backbone of my practice. Unless permission is granted, and a connection is asked for, a medium has absolutely no business giving messages. A random person giving a message to a person that is in any kind of psychological distress that can cause damage. This is not the kind of karma I want! It is incredibly important that these connections are made at the correct time and in the correct place.

As I went about filling my cart, I hear, “Katie?!” And there was one of my clients walking down the aisle of the produce section. She exuded an air of melancholy, as if carrying the weight of unseen burdens. Taking a deep breath, I approached her, my cart squeaking in protest.

“How have you been?” I began tentatively, “I barely saw you, it’s like when I’m shopping, I have blinders on.” She talked briefly about how all the prices on everything have gone up so very much, asked how I’d been doing, and made small talk. Then stated she had been meaning to set up an appointment.

I felt since I had known her for several years, I would go ahead and ask, “Okay this sounds weird, but you do know me so, and I ask?”  She laughed and said, “Yup, I know you pretty well throughout all these years, please share what’s going on!” I continued, “Do you have a connection to someone named Abigail?”  My fellow shopper/ client’s eyes widened, and she laughed again stating, “Yup, just when I need you and her, look at this synchronicity! Abigail was my grandmother,” she stated, a mixture of surprise and curiosity in her voice.

Having been validated, I felt a subtle energy shift within me, signaling the presence of Abigail, eager to convey a message to her granddaughter.

Then inwardly I saw the image of an old, well-worn recipe card. “Your grandmother wants you to know that she sees you struggling in the kitchen,” I conveyed, my words carrying the essence of Abigail’s playful spirit. “She used to say I was hopeless in the kitchen; I’ve been hunting down one of her old recipe cards recently. I think it vanished when we moved. I really miss her cookies we used to make for Christmas every year!”

The message continued to unfold as Abigail spoke of a cherished childhood toy, a teddy bear that was hidden away in her walk-in closet. She grinned as she recounted the very Teddy bear, she thought no one else knew about—a comforting presence during lonely nights in her youth. ‘Your grandmother also wants to share with you that that old recipe card is very close, it kind of feels like it’s just tucked away inside an old cookbook. I honestly didn’t think anyone used those anymore!” We laughed together at that and promised to keep in touch.

As I resumed my grocery shopping, I couldn’t help but marvel at the profound connections that could be forged in the most ordinary of places.

My grocery store pal did keep in touch, the very next day, texted me to let me know that grandma was right, the card was right there the entire time. The only problem was that her cooking skills had not improved, and she burnt the first batch. However she did share the recipe so I could make them for her—recipe provided below! (Yes!, they are amazing!)

This experience was a reminder that mediumship isn’t confined to grand theatrics or mystical settings. It’s a humble, everyday practice—a journey of listening, understanding, and delivering messages that transcend the boundaries of the material world. In the aisles of a grocery store leaving behind a sense of closure and a profound affirmation that the ethereal is woven into the fabric of our everyday lives.

Please share my post and the recipe!
